While automatic garage doors were seen as a luxury for many years, nowadays they’re becoming increasingly more commonplace. Allowing garage access at just one touch of a button, electric garage doors are the perfect solution for people with limited mobility or those who want to maximise convenience in their everyday lives.

Hörmann is one of the leading figures in the garage door industry and their automatic garage doors are one of the most popular models available. However, like any piece of technology,  your garage door remote can be subject to frustrating malfunctions over time.

Has your Hörmann garage door remote stopped working? Here at Associated Garage Doors, we’ve written this article to help, detailing some of the most common Hörmann garage door remote issues that we come across.

Hörmann garage door remote battery check

If your garage door remote isn’t working, the first thing you should do is check the batteries; the fix could be as simple as replacing them with fresh ones. Most modern Hörmann garage door remotes feature an LED light that flashes red twice when the batteries are nearly empty. Replacing the batteries in a Hörmann remote is easy enough; just slide off or unscrew the back panel and insert the new ones.

If you’ve replaced the batteries in your Hörmann remote and it’s still not working, you might want to check that the battery terminals have not corroded. If they look crusted or discoloured, then this might be preventing proper connection. To remove any corrosion, lightly dip a cotton bud in either lemon juice or vinegar and gently rub any crusted areas away.

Check for obstructions

Garage door sensors are incredibly sensitive and use infrared technology to communicate with the remote control. Therefore, any kind of obstruction can disrupt this signal and cause connectivity problems, so check the immediate area around your garage door sensor for anything that may be blocking its path.

Once you’ve ensured there’s nothing in the way, you should then give both the garage door sensor and the infrared eyes on your Hörmann remote a gentle wipe to remove any dirt or condensation. Garage door remotes can be incredibly sensitive to the slightest bit of moisture or dust, so regular cleaning can prevent any issues with operation.

How do I reset my Hörmann garage door remote?

If you’ve tried all of the above steps and have still had no luck in getting your garage door remote to work, you may need to try resetting it. When you reset a garage door remote, it essentially clears its memory and takes it back to factory settings so that you can then reconnect it to your garage door system. The process varies depending on what type of Hörmann remote you have, but for most models, the method is as follows:

  1. Remove the batteries for at least 10 seconds.
  2. Hold the ‘programming’ buttons down and then reinsert the battery.
  3. The LED light at the back of your remote will start flashing blue. Keep the button held down until the light either turns red or stops flashing.
  4. Your garage door remote is now reset.
